While today, IT solutions are a
great enabler in practically every sector and part of society,
we see that a lack of e-skills is becoming an increasingly
tighter bottleneck to the rapid adoption of technology and
therefore obstructing ICT investments and innovation in Europe.
Therefore, Europe needs to invest in ICT and in the e-skills
needed to reap the benefits of ICT investments.
As the biggest technology company
in Europe, Middle East and Africa,
HP participates in the “e-Skills Industry Leadership Board"
(e-Skills ILB) as we would like to make
a contribution to the society and
countries in which we do business.
We see the necessity to close the
growing gap of e-skills in Europe and to strengthen the competitiveness
of the European Union. Furthermore,
we are continuously looking for
talented
employees with excellent e-skills.
HP contributes to this collaborative
initiative through in particular
through
- Global Citizenship programmes
Microenterprise Acceleration
Programme (MAP)
- Graduate Entrepreneurship Training
through IT (GET-IT) Programme
- Technology for Teaching University
Programme
- HP/UNESCO Brain Drain South
East Europe and Africa
- eLearning Communities and Education

Global Citizenship
Global Citizenship
or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
is one of HP´s seven core corporate objectives. Global
Citizenship is the belief that
by using our global reach,
knowledge, expertise and inventive
spirit we can make a positive
difference to the world and
the communities in which we
do business. Three of our core
programmes within Global Citizenship
contribute to the e-Skills
ILB.
Microenterprise Acceleration Programme (MAP)
HP’s Microenterprise Acceleration Programme (MAP) provides
micro-enterprises access to technology and training helping
them to accelerate and sustain business growth and economic
opportunity. In 2006, the non-profit organization Micro-Enterprise
Acceleration Institute (MEA-I) took over the management of
the MAP programme in EMEA from HP. HP is still involved in
the programme and, as a platinum sponsor of the Institute and
supports its efforts to develop new MAP training centres across
the region. In collaboration with NGOs we have so far created
45 of such training centres all over Europe, which are developing
e-skills for SMEs . We aim to train a total 30,000 SMEs and
we are in the process of creating 100 MAPs by the end of the
year. For further information
Graduate Entrepreneurship Training through IT” (GET-IT)
GET-IT is a collaborative programme
with NGOs in 18 countries in Europe. The programme provides
IT equipment for these organisations as well as professional
guidance courses for their trainers. It will enable them
to offer interactive courses specifically designed to improve
business IT skills of young unemployed school leavers and
graduates. In 2007 we have established 35 GET-IT training
centres to educate 6000 young people in a first phase. For further information
Technology for Teaching
HP's Technology for Teaching
Grant Initiative is creating
new models of success on campus
for integrating mobile technology into learning environments.
This educational programme
aims to make a positive difference
to teacher and student
learning experiences, through
the innovative application of mobile
technologies. The Technology
for Teaching grants are designed to provide universities
with the tools to redesign
courses in maths, science and
business. Over the past three years 30 universities across
Europe, Middle East and Africa
(EMEA) were awarded an HP Mobile
Technology for Teaching
Grant for equipment and cash
valued at approximately €56,000.

Alleviating Brain Drain in South Eastern Europe and Africa
From 1990 to 2000, South Eastern
European countries affected
by the Balkans conflict suffered not only huge loss of life,
but also loss of intellectual
capacity. It is estimated that
up to 70 percent of teaching and research jobs have been
lost in some university faculties
in the region. HP´s project in collaboration with UNESCO
has strengthened scientific and educational capacities at
the national level, and re-established dialogue among young
researchers from the region after years of broken communication.
Working with universities in Croatia, Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina,
Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, the project has resulted
in the development of websites, databases and new research
projects at the involved universities. A similar project
has been launched in 2006 with African universities.

eLearning Communities and Education Webportals
HP´s Services organisation offers a complete portfolio
of mobility and wireless services to help organizations the
education sector stay on the go and become more efficient and
responsive at the same time. For example HP´s Classroom
2000 solution is an initiative
to bring Northern Ireland’s 1,245 primary and post-primary
schools into the information age, thus representing one of
the world’s largest eLearning communities.
MySchool!
is another project under which a secure Web portal for use
by all members of the Luxembourg educational community has
been implemented. MySchool! is now Europe's largest public
education portal, accessible to 46,000 users.
